Probos is thé data authority on forest and timber-related statistics. Reliable statistics and market data on forest and wood are of great importance for policy, research and forest management. Collecting, processing, analysing and communicating statistics has been Probos' core activity for decades.

Trees and forests are under pressure due to drought, acidification, fragmentation, overgrazing, and climate change. Probos supports forest managers in making their forests future-proof. We do this by unlocking practical (management) knowledge and developing tools that contribute to climate-smart forest management. We act as the link between science, policy, and practice, focusing on knowledge integration: ensuring that developed knowledge and policy are implemented in practice. Where we identify knowledge gaps, we actively contribute to knowledge development—both independently and in collaboration with partners.

Forests and trees are indispensable for both people and nature. They are home to a wealth of plant and animal species, filter particular matter from the air, capture CO₂, purify and retain water, provide cooling, and are a favorite destination for recreation. As such, forests can play a crucial role in addressing major societal challenges. At the same time, the Netherlands has, after Malta, the smallest proportion of forest relative to its total land area of all European countries. This is why Probos is committed to expanding the forested area and enhancing the forest-water mosaic in rural landscapes.

We do this by developing and sharing knowledge, tools, and practical examples—not only in the field of forestry and planting, but also in spatial integration, smart multifunctional land use, and cost-benefit analyses.

Probos is the knowledge and advisory center for forest expansion: from idea generation to planning and implementation, and everything involved in the route to more forests.

With the world’s population expected to grow to around 10 billion by 2050 and global wealth increasing, pressure on land use is rising. Nearly half of the Earth's original forests have already disappeared, and only a small portion of the remaining forests are protected. Reforestation is crucial, but it does not compensate for the unique value that old and original forests represent. That is why Probos actively contributes to preventing deforestation, both in the Netherlands and in vulnerable forests worldwide. Increasing the value of forests reduces the risk of degradation and conversion to other land uses. It strengthens the business case for forests and sustainable forest management.
