Climate-smart forestry
Link between science, policy and practice
Trees and forests are under pressure due to drought, acidification, fragmentation, overgrazing, and climate change. Probos supports forest managers in making their forests future-proof. We do this by unlocking practical (management) knowledge and developing tools that contribute to climate-smart forest management. We act as the link between science, policy, and practice, focusing on knowledge integration: ensuring that developed knowledge and policy are implemented in practice. Where we identify knowledge gaps, we actively contribute to knowledge development—both independently and in collaboration with partners.
In 'Climate-smart forestry' our activities are focussed on the following topics:
- Enhancing forest reslilience
- Grazing Pressure and Wildlife Management for Forest Regeneration and Biodiversity
- Tree Species Composition
- Invasive Alien Species
- Cultural heritage as a source of inspiration

Data on forest resilience in the Province of Drenthe
In September 2022, the ‘Drenthe Tree and Forest Strategy’ was adopted by the Provincial Council of Drenthe, as a regional implementation of the Dutch National Forest Strategy. One of its key components is to improve the resilience of existing forests in Drenthe. To support the development of a policy memorandum on the revitalisation of Drenthe’s forests, the province commissioned Stichting Probos to gather and analyse relevant forest data, specifically about forest vitality. This data provides a foundation based on independently collected data. An exploratory study was conducted, in which available data were compiled and analysed.
Toolkit climate smart forestry
Climate smart forestry is essential to achieve the ambitions of the Dutch National Climate Agreement and the National Forest Strategy. Climate smart forestry focuses on increasing the resilience of forests to climate change (adaptation) and capturing (more) CO₂ in trees and forest soils (mitigation). Sharing knowledge and experiences is crucial in this process. The “Climate smart forestry Toolkit” serves as the central hub for this.
Forests, Keepers of time
Nearly all European forests have been influenced by many generations of people. Every generation has left behind its traces, which are visible till this day in the form of e.g. boundary and wildlife banks, Celtic fields, burial mounds, loam and iron extraction pits, avenues and tree rows, coppice forest, border trees, historical roads and paths, historical buildings, etc.
