Toolkit climate smart forestry

18 February 2025

Climate smart forestry is essential to achieve the ambitions of the Dutch National Climate Agreement and the National Forest Strategy. Climate smart forestry focuses on increasing the resilience of forests to climate change (adaptation) and capturing (more) CO₂ in trees and forest soils (mitigation). Sharing knowledge and experiences is crucial in this process. The “Climate smart forestry Toolkit” serves as the central hub for this.

The aim of the Toolkit is to inspire and support forest managers, landowners, and policymakers in selecting the right climate-smart measures. It provides descriptions of measures with information on their effects on climate, timber production, nature, and recreation, as well as their costs and benefits. Example projects include locations in The Netherlands where these measures have been implemented in practice, along with insights gained from those projects. In addition, the Toolkit offers various tools, such as fact sheets on potentially climate-smart tree species, a tree species table, and the tree species portal. The tree species table provides an overview of how different tree species score on characteristics relevant to Climate smart forestry. The tree species portal serves as a platform for forest managers and landowners to share experiences with new or lesser-known tree species.
