In the project ToP DATA (from Tree to Panel – Data for Accurate and Transparent Assessment) Probos Foundation collaborates with W/E Advisors Foundation and SHR to actualise the process data used for environmental impact calculations for cross laminated timber (CLT). A big part of the data that is currently used is aged and poorly traceable, resulting in the absence of a realistic calculation of the environmental impact of this structural element.
It is expected that the environmental impact of wood (which includes CLT) is lower than the value currently displayed in EPD’s (Environmental Product Declaration), which causes the implementation of wood to be unnecessarily hindered. It is known that the choice of materials has a significant impact on the environment and CO2-emissions. Probos is convinced that the use of biobased materials like wood can and should contribute greatly to achieving the climate targets.
Within this project the focus lies with the production phase of CLT, from the forest to the structural element. The efficiency of the processes will be examined, as well as the residual flows to which the environmental impact can be allocated. This data can then serve as building blocks for future LCA’s. In the ToP DATA project Probos is mainly responsible for the mapping of data related to forest management and sawn timber production.
