Since June 2021, it has been possible to apply for carbon certificates from the National Carbon Market Foundation (SNK) for projects that sequester CO₂ through the planting of new forests and trees outside of forested areas. Farmers who implement agroforestry plantings—such as silvopasture (tree meadows) or linear plantings like hedgerows—can apply for carbon certificates. By selling these certificates, they can generate additional income to support the business model of agroforestry-based farming.
However, generating carbon certificates also involves costs. To reduce these costs for individual farmers, submitting a joint application to SNK may be a more financially attractive option. Together with the Province of North Brabant, Stichting Probos and Rombouts Agroecology conducted a practical assessment of the feasibility of a joint application for carbon certification.
Stichting Probos, Rombouts Agroecology, and Crops Advies are now continuing this initiative with a group of approximately 5 to 10 farmers, working towards a collaborative application for carbon certificates through SNK.
