Promotion of Nearshoring Transformation and Trade Facilitation – Zero Deforestation Timber (Mexico)

20 October 2025

In the framework of the Zero Deforestation Timber project under the AL-INVEST Verde programme, led by the International Tropical Timber Technical Association (ATIBT), community forest enterprises (ejidos) in Campeche and Quintana Roo are working to strengthen their participation in international value chains. These regions in southern Mexico possess rich forest resources managed under community-based systems, yet face challenges in reaching high-value export markets that require legal, traceable, and sustainable timber. This project aims to promote nearshoring transformation models and improve trade facilitation between local producers and European buyers, in line with the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR).

The initiative supports forest ejidos in improving their production and commercial capacities to access European markets through sustainable business models. Activities include a practical workshop on nearshoring transformation, commercial training sessions, and a B2B meeting linking Mexican suppliers with European buyers. The project also provides technical assistance to introduce new timber species and facilitates commercial agreements that strengthen sustainable forest trade. The work under this project is led by Minkadev Mexico.

Probos provides the project’s technical backbone for the ‘trade management and facilitation’ component. Its role focuses on European market analysis, segmentation of potential buyers, and guidance on compliance with European timber trade and sustainability regulations. Probos supports the introduction of new Mexican tropical timber species to Europe, assists in regulatory and export processes, and strengthens relationships for durable and responsible trade connections. Through its expertise in sustainable forest management and international timber markets, Probos bridges community forestry in Mexico with European demand for deforestation-free, traceable wood products.
