FSC hout in Suriname; naast gezaagd hout ook belangstelling voor houtafval

05 September 2016

Since 2015, more than 400,000 hectares of tropical forest have been FSC certified in Suriname. To bring supply and demand together, an European FSC trade mission was organized at the end of 2015 with 17 timber importers. People were enthusiastic about what the Surinamese forest and the FSC-certified companies have to offer. Two participants were particularly interested in the wood waste. Together with a number of Surinamese wood processors, we investigated whether this residual wood can be processed into high-quality charcoal. The results are promising and offer an attractive alternative to dumping and/or burning this wood waste, which is often the case now.
