STTC Conference: Sustainably managed forests as part of the solution to climate change

07 september 2021

The annual European Sustainable Tropical Timber Coalition (STTC) Conference, Thursday November 18 2021, Online

The European timber sector requires a combination of actions to combat illegal tropical timber trade and deforestation and to ensure sustainability. These actions would lead to strengthened cooperation and partnership between the public and the private sector, and demand and supply-side stakeholders. Further demand-side legislation is needed to ensure that EU commodity supply chains are deforestation-free and that EU consumption is transparently sustainable.

The 2021 European Sustainable Tropical Timber Coalition (STTC) and ATIBT Conference will therefore be centered around two themes:
* The role of certified forests in slowing down climate change
* Deforestation and the landscape approach and ecosystem services

Join the conference to learn from the experience of companies, trade federations, NGOs and certification schemes, and share best practices with other delegates. This year’s event will include presentations, panel discussions, question and answer sessions and delegate thematic sessions.

Background
The European Sustainable Tropical Timber Coalition (STTC) is an alliance of industry, business, government and NGOs dedicated to increasing European demand for sustainably sourced tropical timber. The coalition is convened and supported by IDH Sustainable Trade Initiative, and backed by a number of key partners, including the European Timber Trade Federation (ETTF), the International Tropical Timber Technical Association (ATIBT), the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC). The STTC’s aim is to strengthen demand for verified sustainable tropical timber, in order to incentivise the growth and spread of responsible forest management in tropical countries.
